Lesson plans are presented in eight to 10 steps with instructions on how to select the steps to build 60-minute or 90-minute sessions, with additional activities included for longer sessions or to add variety. The Catechist Guide provides practical, easy-to-follow directions for presenting the material in each lesson of the Candidate Edition. The spiral-bound catechist edition introduces each unit with the objectives of that lesson and key ideas to be covered. The Catechist Guide also supports the work of catechists in many other important ways. Each lesson plan in the Catechist Guide includes

• Objectives that state the learners’ goals for each lesson of the Candidate Edition.
• Key Ideas that summarize the major points of the Catholic Tradition covered in the lesson
• Background and Insights that provides theological and scriptural background and information on the psychological and spiritual development of adolescents
• Timing options that give suggestions for one-hour, 90-minute, or longer sessions
• Teaching process that offers step-by-step directions for using varied and effective teaching methods
• Called to Serve feature that suggests a possible group service activity
• Reproducible Handouts that support and augment the lesson content
• Reproducible Notes for Parents and Sponsors that offer lesson-by-lesson suggestions for ways in which parents and sponsors can support their young persons’ Confirmation preparation
